River of Gods

River of Gods - Ian McDonald With a broad cast and many disconnected scenes, River of Gods starts out seeming a lot like the year 2047 Indian soap opera (here cleverly called a soapi) its plot sometimes follows. In fact, the novel appears too tightly focused on its massive cast with no connections made between characters or with any end goal in sight. Little by little, however, these streams of experience push forward a story that is as fascinating in concept as it is exciting in its pace. River of Gods is immensely rewarding if you stick with it for the long view, though a little bit more direction early on would have helped keep the prize in sight.
