If I Stay

If I Stay - Gayle Forman For as tragic a Young Adult book as is "If I Stay," it somehow avoids bitter theatrics, condescending emotional plays, and fretting too much about the technical aspects of its character's ethereal narration to distract from its heartbreaking impact. It dodges drama for drama's sake, and instead provides a rich family of characters, each of whom seem legitimately connected and carefully constructed, and puts these individuals in one of the more emotionally painful scenarios I could imagine. That the tragedy is so massive, and narrator Mia's remembrances so vivid, makes the loss and its exploration a wrenching but captivating read for those well into the adult range. Reading this small book was an amazing experience.
