The Black Prism (Lightbringer)

The Black Prism - Brent Weeks Despite a premise that brings to mind an embodiment Magic: The Gathering, with crafters spewing brightly colored "luxin" like shaving cream from their fingers, The Black Prism turns out to be much more satisfying than that, if not quite to the level of the brilliant Night Angel Trilogy (See: The Way of Shadows). The final conflict feels slightly overdrawn, though better paced and more interesting than those within other regarded trilogies, but the greater enjoyment comes from many smaller plot points reaching a head. Readers are prepared for a sequel with both broader and smaller details to work out, and none with small stakes attached. Weeks' very human cast ensures believability, and surprises at every turn.
