Don't Look Back

Don't Look Back - Karin Fossum, Felicity David "Don't Look Back" is a well plotted, expertly populated, and cleverly (almost tragically) bookended mystery that introduces Inspector Konrad Sejer and his assistant Jacob Skarre. Fossum elevates her novels above the norm by showing the missteps in police work as much as the achievements; it's a wonderful device that not only humanizes her characters, but increases the tension for readers who are helpless to interfere. Of all the mysteries I've read set in the Nordic region, including the greatly enjoyable novels of Iceland's Arnaldur Indridason, Fossum is easily the best writer among them, bringing emotional depth to her stories, and genuine human development.
